A St. Louis County lawmaker is asking for a shorter Missouri legislative session. Republican State Senator John Lamping says he would like to shorten the session by over a month, having it end in late March, instead of mid-May, starting in 2015.
His proposal has made it out of committee and lawmakers may begin debating it on the floor of the State Senate this week.
The state legislature could save more than $400,000 a year according to estimates from Lamping’s office.
The proposal does not mention changing lawmaker’s salaries, which are about $36,000 a year, if they shorten the sessions.
Lamping says his idea is not about the money. Rather, he says a shorter session would encourage lawmakers to be more efficient when they meet at the Capitol.
