Bob Cohee, president of the local organization Citizens for Clean Water, says that group has not yet filed a lawsuit against the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality for alleged non-enforcement issues at the Nabors Landfill, but Cohee said legal action against the state agency is still a possibility.
Citizens for Clean Water accused the agency of treating the Nabors site differently from other landfills around the state by allowing it to continue operations while out of compliance without major fines or shutdowns.
In response, ADEQ Director Teresa Marks told Cohee the agency is continuing its efforts to resolve landfill issues, adding that she did not feel any current issues present a concern for negative impact to the environment. She said plans were in the works to resolve the non-compliance issues.
Cohee said the bottom line of concern for the local organization is the contamination of underground water, and subsequently, the water in Norfork Lake.
