Despite problems that turned up in a recent investigation, a state committee says that the Arkansas Department of Corrections will still assign inmate workers to the Baxter County jail.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette newspaper reports that an oversight committee voted this week to allow the Baxter County Sheriff’s Department to continue participating in a state program that allows inmates to cook, cut grass, and perform other chores.

A recent investigation showed that inmates in Baxter County had made excessive phone calls and that one of them had loaned money to a jail administrator, who was later fired.

Baxter County authorities say they have corrected the issues.
