A man staying at a motel is accused of hiring homeless people to collect donations for a nonprofit group with which he has no connection. Branson police think Derl Sharp managed to collect at least $2,000 on behalf of Disabled American Veterans before he was arrested on Thursday.
Springfield Television, KY3 is reporting theTaney County prosecuting attorney charged Sharp, 53, on Friday with stealing.
Branson Police Sgt. Mike Hoag says hired homeless people on a pocket-cash basis to collect money in and around Branson. Through one of the homeless “employees,” police tracked Sharp to the Grand Village Motel on Missouri 76.
Hoag says Sharp first gave police a phony name. Later, they found out he has outstanding warrants and the U.S.Marshals Service is looking for him, too.
Sharp apparently took advantage of Branson’s annual Veterans Week, when the city honors military service members ahead of Veterans Day.
