A landmark that had been lit at night for the past 45 years in Eureka Springs is now dark.
Spotlights no longer illuminate the Christ of the Ozarks statue overlooking Eureka Springs from Magnetic Mountain.
The statue is part of The Great Passion Play property that's being taken over by Cornerstone Bank in lieu of foreclosure. Bank President Charles Cross told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that the lights were turned off to save money, but they may be turned back when the bank formally acquires the property early next year.
The Passion Play depicts the last week of the life of Jesus. It closed for good in October because of financial difficulties.
The statue with arms spread open is nearly 70 feet tall and 65 feet from
fingertip to fingertip.
