Illinois Murder Suspect Fatally Wounded in Arkansas

A murder suspect recently passing through Missouri was fatally shot by a Bryant, Arkansas police officer late Tuesday evening.  Thomas O’Dell was wanted on a murder warrant out of Illinois related to the March 18th shooting death of Benjamin Newton at a pub in Mattoon, Illinois.

 Bryant officers were responding to a burglary call at a store late last night when they encountered O’Dell in a fenced-in area. O’Dell and a Bryant officer exchanged gunfire in which both men were wounded.  O’Dell was pronounced dead at Saline Memorial Hospital, and the officer was treated and released from a hospital for his injuries. 

Bryant is about 20 miles southwest ofLittle Rock.

Authorities say he was also suspected in two vehicle thefts in Missouri last week; one in Mansfield and the other in Springfield.
