Arkansas Senate Approves Plan to Fund Low-Income Insurance

The Arkansas Senate on Friday approved a proposal to use federal funds to purchase private insurance for low-income workers.
The Senate approved the private-option proposal that legislative leaders have said is preferable to the Medicaid expansion called for under the federal health care law.
Arkansas would use Medicaid dollars to purchase private coverage for the newly eligible, and the insurance would be purchased through an exchange set up under the federal law.
Supporters of the measure say it saves Arkansas money by cutting down on hospitals' uncompensated costs.
