Rogers Mayor pledges to run positive campaign and protect Wellness Center, calls DeLay false attack "early" but, "unfortunately, not unexpected"
Rogers Mayor and Republican 3rd District Congressional candidate Steve Womack today issued the following statement. It responds to Gunner Delay's statements regarding the Rogers Adult Wellness Center made in a press release this morning:
It's a bit early in the game still, but today's false attacks were, unfortunately, not unexpected.
I have pledged to run a positive campaign. My campaign is based on facts and my proven record of conservative leadership. I believe the people of the 3rd District deserve a campaign that offers real solutions, not more of the same old political rhetoric and false attacks that Mr. DeLay offers today.
I think the over 12,000 dues paying members of the Rogers Adult Wellness Center will be very upset by Mr. Delay's description of the Wellness Center as a "boondoggle" and an example of "wasteful government spending." The Center averages over 1,000 visitors a day; the benefits to many citizens across the 3rd District have been nothing short of life changing. My goal to offer these same opportunities in other areas has been well received throughout the 3rd District.
It's concerning that someone running for the 3rd District appears to have such a fundamental lack of understanding of a great area success story like the Wellness Center. I think it's safe to say Mr. DeLay has never visited the Center, so I would like to invite him for a personal tour.
I presume as a member of Congress Mr. DeLay would work to end "boondoggles." To the extent he believes the Wellness Center is one of them, I know the Center's members would be eager to "visit" with him about any of his plans to try and shut the Center down. Regardless, the people of the 3rd District can count on me to fight for the Wellness Center and others like it.
Another thing people can count on is that I will not wildly throw out rhetoric about important issues, like taxes and spending, that isn't based in fact just to try and win votes. That's exactly what Mr. DeLay does when he labels the Wellness Center as fiscally irresponsible. Mr. DeLay can talk about his fiscal conservatism; I have a record to prove mine.
As Rogers Mayor, I ended deficit spending, balanced the budget, and built the Wellness Center, all without a tax increase. It requires prioritization of spending. In Congress, I will work for the same, opposing bailouts, tax increases, government take overs and welfare increases. But again, Mr. Delay's apparent failure to understand that worthy projects which help real people, things like roads and schools and Wellness Centers, can be funded, with balanced budgets and without tax increases, should cause real concern for voters.
