JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - The state fire marshal is urging Missourians to change the batteries in their smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms this weekend.
Fire Marshal Randy Cole issued his message ahead of the start of daylight saving time on Sunday.
More than 2,500 Americans die and 15,000 are injured each year in residential fires. The National Safety Council says that almost 700 people die annually from accidental poisoning by gases when there is no fire - generally meaning carbon monoxide.
Cole says that 80 percent of children killed in residential fires were in homes without a working smoke detector.
